An adjunct to biblical teaching about the third Elijah
Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” And he said to them, “Elijah is indeed coming first, and will restore all things. How then does it say in the Scriptures that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt? Mark 9:11-12
The man prophesied by Christ is still not widely known. In that sense, Elijah has not yet come. We know this because not everything has been restored yet. We cannot apply this prophecy to anyone who has not restored everything as the original prophet Elijah did in Israel. Then it was clear who was with the Lord and who was not.
What kind of man is this Elijah? Our purely human assumption would be that he must be a person of exceptional qualities of faithfulness.
Jesus revealed a different reality here. It is true, He says, Elijah will indeed perform a great work of final reformation before His second coming. However, Christ will suffer much from this man and for a certain time even be despised. So Christ will suffer and be despised not from unbelievers or sinners, but here it is written that even though he will be Elijah, a holy man of God, until he truly becomes so, he will do things that will greatly afflict Christ. Elijah will have great love because much has been forgiven him. Much will be forgiven him because he will commit a great transgression.
Can we bear these words?
These words also agree with these:
And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication, so that they will look on me whom they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only son, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn. Zechariah 12:10
Since Elijah is the greatest among the people of God in the last times, as prophesied by Zechariah, then it is certain that this refers to him, that is, that he pierced Jesus. Both he and those with him.
Where is your arrogance and pride now, you who call yourself a believer? For if the best among us is like a thorn, piercing Jesus’ forehead, how godless and fallen away from God are you?
According to the Holy Scriptures, there has never been a generation that has shamed God and done more evil than our generation of believers to which we belong.
Also, never before has God been more ready to receive and forgive and use a group of people. Yes, there is a great awakening, but first there must be a great lamentation.
In that day there will be a great lamentation in Jerusalem, like the lamentation of Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. And the land will mourn, every family apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family ofthe Shimeites apart, and their wives apart; all the remaining families, every family apart, and their wives apart.
